How to Use Glass Top Drawing Table

Introduction: WAFFLE+GLASS Design Table

Here it is my WAFFLE AND GLASS DESIGN TABLE for a replace your living room coffee table with a piece of minimal design. Is this amazing or what ???

Supplies

Is made with MDF wood -- Half sheet of 5.5mm thinckness-- The cuts are made with a laser cutting and the glass is a piece of 75x75cm -6mm thinkness. Nothing else.

Step 1: DESIGN PROCESS

The design is based on the 3d shape contouring on both direction X and Y, to become a WAFFLE STRUCTURE of the laser cutted wood and a sheet of glass on the top to show the bottom part. The idea is based on singular linear ribs but togheter they show a fluid and curved form giving to the wood some extra value showing this material can be used on a different way !

The table has a central void to put stuff in there over the wood like magazines. But is better with nothing to show the design. I had this vision of a single object on the glass top like flying and below it the shape of the wood creating that contrast of top/bottom. Like the picture !!

Step 2: MODELING

I made the 3d modeling on Rhinoceros 3d - The design is based on 4 curves that loft togheter in the center. The idea is that the support begin in the middle botom and connect to 4 individual corners of the top generating the central void.

Step 3: CONTOURING

The contour is made with grasshopper3d. A parametric design tool that allows to convert a 3d shape into a waffle structure. Is a complex process so i upload the cuts for you to cut the table without learn all the process. The images show the 3d shape that turn into the individual ribs.

Step 4: FILES FOR LASERCUT

Here is the file for laser cutting !! All yout have to do is import to your CAD/CAM software and set the cuts to your machine ! There are for MDF cut 5.5mm thickness -- The cuts enter in a half sheet of MDF (4 sheets of 900*600 mm) -- The numbers are for engraving to know where each rib goes to assemble.

Step 5: ASSEMBLY First the Cuts !

Once you have the cuts --- The assembly is so easy ! We put some glue into the inserts to give more streght to the table structure. The cuts are numbered for an easy assembly process!

Step 6: THE GLASS

When you have finished the WAFFLE STRUCTURE -- Wait 12 hours if u assembled with carpenter glue - and then put the glass with the tiny laser cutted triangles. We recomend to use the 3M stickers like the ones like being used with the gopro mounts (like silicone sticker) but you can use transparent silicone and wait to it dries.

AND IF YOU LIKE IT YOU CAN USE IT UPSIDE DOWN TOO !!

Step 7: FINAL DESIGN !!

I hope you like the final product !!

The best part of digital fabrication is that if u have a laser cutter access you can easy fabricate this design table !! Only you have to donwload the file and do this instructable !!

Step 8: EXPERIMENTATION !!

Experimentation is the most interesting thing you can do with this project. If you do not have access to a cnc, you can print the template, paste it on a sheet of wood and cut it with a jigsaw.

You can import the drawing of the cuts in your CAD program and modify the size of the inserts to match the width of your sheet material. To cut other materials you can use other CNC machines.

Step 9: TRANSFORM YOUR SPACE!

When i started this design i based on give to the space an object that combines with modern, classic and vintage furniture. The table itself is an object that can be combined and match with your other furniture or can be the piece of art that breaks and generate that modern contrast. AND IT WILL BE MADE BY YOU!!
